About Me:I'm a graduate student studying International Criminal Law and first started writing for King's News almost 4 years ago! My hobbies include reading, travelling and charity work. I cover many categories but my favourite articles to write are about mysteries of the ancient world, interesting places to visit, the Italian language and animals!
If you’re in search of something fun to do you’ll be surprised at just how many cool science experiments can be done in the comfort of your own home! This article will help you create your very own rainbow and understand how they work so why not try it or comment below with another fun science experiment you know of!
Things you’ll need:
- A glass of water roughly three quarters full
- White paper
- A nice sunny day!
Instructions:
Step 1 – Place the glass and paper by a window where the sun can hit it
Step 2 – Hold the glass of water over the paper; you’ll notice that the sunlight passes through the glass and refracts (bends/ changes course of direction when it enters at an angle) and forms various colours on the sheet of paper.
Step 3 – Why not try holding the glass higher or lower and change its angle to see if it creates different effects on the paper! Just be careful not to spill the glass of water!
What has actually happened?
Although we are used to seeing rainbows as long colourful arcs in the sky they can also take other forms and can be seen in waterfalls or created by us like the one in this experiment! Rainbows are formed when lots of raindrops reflect sunlight and break the white sunlight into seven different colours (just like a prism breaks light into seven different colours!).
