Ghost Girl (Part 2)
At first, I thought I was imagining it. The water did not seem so murky anymore. Droplets kept falling onto the surface of the water, fraying and distorting the shape I saw. The water rippled, and I could still not see the thing clearly.
After a few minutes of sitting there suspiciously, eyes narrowed, feet still in the water, I stood up, brushing the droplets off my face and pulling the hood over my head. Thrusting my hands deep into my pockets with the rain still thundering, I slowly turned around and took a few steps. A few steps was all it took.
I never knew you could get that feeling, when you just know someone is looking at you from behind. I’ve never had that feeling before. Well, now I just felt it. Somehow, I felt as if eyes were boring holes in the back of my head, I knew I wasn’t pretending.
Frowning slightly, I swiveled around, glancing at everything around, shielding the falling rain with my hand. All I could see were people hunched walking their dogs, little children running around splashing in puddles and ducks waddling on the muddy bank or swimming, shaking their heads every so often.
The rain was falling less heavily now. And I could see more clearly. Still frowning, I was starting to wonder whether I really was imagining things. That it wasn’t an I-think-someone-is-looking-behind-me feeling. Maybe I was just hungry?
My question was answered when I took a look at the water’s edge, where I had slipped.
Straight away, my mouth formed a shape of an ‘o’.
Who knew?
Did I ever know?
How was I ever going to know, anyway?
Who knew that what I saw was a girl?
Not just a girl, walking around the lake, or walking her dog, or sitting on a bench. A girl, that was in the water.
But I had an inkling that she was no ordinary girl. Her face was pale, as white as a ghost. I felt I could almost see through it. Her strange, pale blue-grey hair flowed out behind her, wavy and shining in the water. Her eyes were big, too big to be human. They were huge, unblinking, blue, beautiful, with long and curled eyelashes framing them. Her lips were curved, pale too. Pretty, pale freckles dotted her face.
It felt like a fairytale dream. I could not see what she was wearing under the water, but it seemed as though she was not wearing anything at all.
Suddenly, pulling me out of my frozen state, a white hand lifted and reached towards the surface of the water.
Who was this mysterious girl?
What was she doing there?
Is she even a girl? If not, what is she?
Why is she here?
What is she going to do to me?
Millions of questions bubbled and boiled in my brain, though they were so fuzzy I could not make them out, I felt… hypnotised. Dreamy.
“Come,” the girl spoke, though I could not see her mouth move. The words echoed. It seemed I had no self-control over myself or my movements.
“Come.”
To be continued.
