Ghost Girl (Part 1)

“Come on, hurry, Jack!” I rushed my older brother Jack, practically dragging him out of the door, whilst he had one arm in the sleeve of his coat, and shoelaces untied.

“Hang on, Lucy! I’m not finished!” Jack laughed heartily, bending down to tie his laces and tidying his coat sleeve. As soon as he was finished, I clutched his arm tightly and pulled it ferociously. “Come on, Jack! I want to get down to the place!”

Me and my brother Jack, nearly every day in the evening, walk down towards our special place. It consists of a little nearby children’s park and a large lake nearby. Not much, but I love it because it’s peaceful and quiet, the grass is soft and I love to lay down on it, looking at the shapes of the clouds, playing with Jack…

My thoughts were disturbed by the sound of Jack’s voice, “Are you coming or not? Changed your mind, eh?” I could hear the grin in his voice.

I shook my head and beamed. “No way, I’m coming! Let’s go!” and I rushed past him in a hurry and raced down the road, just seeing in the corner of my eye that Jack was shaking his head and chuckling.

We arrived at the park in our wellies and waterproof coats, since it was lightly drizzling. The wet pebbles crunched under our feet as we strolled along the path that ran around the lake.

After a few minutes, Jack said, “I’ll go and sit on that bench over there. You can go now.” He nodded understandingly. I smiled gratefully.

In the park, I would always have a few minutes of peaceful privacy somewhere further away, near the lake. I’d sit down or lay down near the water’s edge, feed the ducks if there were any (we always bring soft bread), or I would just daydream. Ever since my mother died, a year ago, I became distant, like I just wanted to be alone, drifting slowly away from the others, as if I was a stray piece of wood unattached from the boat, floating.

Pulling my hood up over the head, I walked, not rushing. This was the part of the day I loved the most. No explanations needed, just me, and my thoughts.

I kicked a few pebbles out of my way, and sat down on the slightly damp grass, legs crossed.

Suddenly, the rain started to slowly quicken, and the sky was a murky-grey colour. Harder and bigger raindrops started to fall, hitting the ground and making big patches of puddles.

I was scrambling up onto my knees, trying to get back to Jack so that we could go home, but I slipped on a sneaky patch of mud, right onto my back. My feet were already a little in the lake, resting on the ground underneath the water. Luckily, I was wearing knee-high wellies, so that the water did not seep into them.

I sighed impatiently, and was about to get back up again, when something caught my eye. Little did I know this would be the cause of all my problems…
