In case you’re not familiar with “Frozen”, this is the Disney sensation that has swept across the world over the last year, and perhaps unfortunately for the few ‘Frozen-haters’, this obsession does not look to be stopping any time soon. For fans living in the UK, next year should be exciting with “Frozen: On Ice” touring the country. This is the same story that we’re familiar with from the films, only performed live and on ice-skates in front of your eyes. It should be a perfect outing for young children, but let’s not forget the older ones too! Being a university student, I know first-hand that the love of this film-musical is not restricted to the primary school age range, but that it is in fact accessible to all, so be prepared to see many older ‘children’ at the show too.
The basic premise, for those who have clearly been trapped by a magic snow storm themselves over the past year, involves two sisters – Elsa and Anna. Elsa’s magic powers to control and create ice have caused a rift between the two of them throughout their upbringing. When Elsa accidentally freezes all of the kingdom and runs away in embarrassment, Elsa must get her to return and make amends in order to save the kingdom. Much what you’d expect from a Disney princess movie, there are still some elements that stand out, such as the character of Olaf, the snowman who longs for summer, and Idina Menzel’s amazing voice in the hit song ‘Let It Go’. Whether these will be translated as well in the ice dancing version of the story is something we’ll have to wait and see.
This show will also be performed as part of Disney’s “Magical Ice Festival”, already open in the USA, which includes performances from a variety of other characters of Disney films, including more princesses, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and those from Pixar films Finding Nemo and Toy Story. For big Disney Fans, this is not to be missed, and is sure to be a lot of fun.
Tickets are now on sale for this exciting new production, but it may only be at a venue near you for a couple of days, so order them quickly to avoid disappointment. The tour will take place between the 11th march and the 17th May and venues announced so far are Aberdeen, Liverpool, Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Cardiff, Nottingham and Leeds.
No doubt this show will do well, and with talk of a Frozen musical on Broadway at some point in the future Disney are really making their money’s worth out of this brand. Currently the fifth highest grossing film in Box-Office History, it’s certainly the biggest thing to have come out of Disney for some time. Whether the show will be merit-worthy in itself is yet unknown, but I think that whatever happens, the faithful fans will love it for its connection to the film alone. My big interest personally is in what Disney are going to release next to top this, and whether future releases are going to be disappointing in comparison. I think that Disney’s reaction to this surprise success will be interesting to watch over the next few years.
