About Me: Hello, I'm Dabbie (short for Dabeluchi). I am a student at Dartford Grammar School for Girls. I love reading mystery books, and solving the mystery with the author. I hope you enjoy reading my stories.
“Here you go. Your first pay cheque.” The manager pulled it out of his chequebook and handed it to her. Without seeming desperate, she took the cheque and put it into her purse with a smile. She left after thanking him continuously. 'First pay cheque,' she thought.
Months had gone by and this job had fit right into her schedule and daily life. Catherine loved it there. Her employees, the customers and just completing the task. Every day, she would walk from her lecture to the shop and got changed into her uniform in the bathroom. Catherine even began to work some extra hours.
The bell vibrated as the door opened. His feet were covered in the latest gold edition trainers. His steps were concise and slow. His coat was knee-length and made of fake fur. It was a short but torturing laugh. It sent shivers down her spine and transformed her face into a tomato. He looked over the counter, to see a recognisable figure hiding underneath the counter. “I didn’t know you were this desperate that you would work in a shop like this. It’s disgusting! I could just …", he looked over at her. “What are you doing, just standing around. Go get me your meal of the day!” he continued to observe the café and criticizing it in his mind. She rushed into the kitchen and gave the crew, her order. They prepared the meal and she took it to his table. “It was about time that you showed up.” William opened up the sandwich and checked the items inside of it.
Later, she returned with the bill and collected his plate. “Wow! I’ve never eaten somewhere with a bill of under £100. I doubt you will be able to pay off your debt with such a low wage. What do you earn? Like £2 per day? Ha!”. William opened his wallet and dropped a £10 note on the table. “Keep the change, you will need it.” He answered his phone and left the store.
She tightened her fist. Carefully, she placed the plates in the sink. She tried not to use her anger. Catherine collected a rag and cleaned the table, muttering to herself. “I’ll show him. Just wait! I will prove him wrong. We will see who is the poor one now.” she tied up the table before ending her shift and left the shop. Little did he know, this motivated her. Each month, Catherine collected her cheque and added it to her savings. It wasn’t long before she had reached the jackpot and even bought a pair of shoes along with it.
It was the last week of term. Catherine walked into her room and collected her chequebook. Catherine entered the taxi as she could afford it. She opened the door and climbed out of the car and walked to the main hall – where she met William. William stood in front of his lawyer. She smiled as she was finally able to pay it off. She filled in the empty spaces and signed the bottom. She felt her face reach as high as her eyes. Catherine handed it to William and walked off. He stood puzzled. His lawyer looked at him and stated. “That did not go as expected.”
