When on holiday in France, or any French-speaking country, you may have to ask various questions or know some basic vocabulary when exploring your destination. Hopefully these phrases and vocab lists will come in handy and you will feel more confident asking questions or explaining to someone your problem whether it be getting lost, or losing a ticket. 

Firstly, I will list the phrases you may need on your trip:

 

Questions:

Où est l’office de tourisme s’il vous plaît ? – Where is the tourist office please ?

 

Dans quelle direction est la plage ? – In which direction is the beach ?

 

Où est le parking le plus proche ? – Where is the nearest carpark ?

 

Où sont les toilettes les plus proches ? – Where are the nearest toilets ?

 

Est-ce que je pourrais réserver une table pour ce soir s’il vous plaît ? – Could I book a table for tonight please ?

 

Est-ce que vous êtes libre ? (for a taxi) – Are you available/free ?

 

Allons-nous être en retard? – Are we going to be late ?

 

Avez-vous de la crème solaire ? – Do you have suncream ?

 

Comment est-ce que je peux acheter un billet ? – How can I buy a ticket ?

 

Comment je fais pour aller à la gare ? How do I get to the train station?

 

Problems :

On est tombé en panne – We have broken down

 

L’avion est parti en retard – The plane took off late

 

J’ai oublié mon passeport – I have forgotten my passport

 

J’ai perdu mon billet – I have lost my ticket

 

Ma valise est trop lourde – My suitcase is too heavy

 

J’ai besoin d’aller au toilette – I need the toilet

 

J’ai soif – I am thirsty

 

Je suis allergique aux noix – I am allergic to nuts

 

Vocab :

 

Modes of transport : l’avion (the plane), l’autocar (the coach), le train (the train), la voiture (the car), le bâteau (the boat).

 

Common holiday activities : Se baigner (to go bathing), se bronzer (to sunbathe), nager (to swim), faire du ski/du surf (to ski/surf), faire une excursion(to do an excursion), faire de la planche à voile (to go windsurfing), faire de l’équitation(to go horse riding), jouer au mini-golf (to play mini golf), faire du patinage sur glace (to go ice-skating).

 

*note that verbs such as ‘se baigner’ are the infinitive. Therefore, to conjugate the verb in the first person to say ‘I bathe’, you need to use ‘je me’. For example ‘je me baigne’ or ‘je me bronze’.

Places: l’agence de voyage (the travel agency), le centre historique (the historic centre), l’hôpital (the hospital), la rue commerciale (the shopping centre), le parc (the park), la poste (the post office), la banque (the bank), le centre ville (the town centre), le bar (the bar), les toilettes publiques (public toilets).

 

Directions: gauche (left), droite (right), tout droit (straight), la prochaine rue (the next road), en face de (in front of), a coté de (next to), derrière (behind), devant (infront), tourner (to turn).
