About Me:Hi I’m Nadege and I study French at the University of Leeds, and I have just completed my third year abroad in Montpellier studying literature and enjoying the sunshine! I love art; painting and being creative, as well as photography and baking. Travelling is my favourite hobby at the moment; experiencing the French language and culture. I hope you enjoy reading some of my articles!
If you decide to eat out when on holiday in France (which I encourage you to do), you may be able to get away with speaking English if you are visiting a city. However, in those restaurants which may not be located in touristic areas, many waiters will expect you to understand the menu, and order in French.
It is therefore important that you are able to order drinks and food, and have a basic vocabulary so that you do not struggle to understand the menus.
Firstly, I will create a role-play of what you could say when entering a restaurant and ordering food/drinks, and what the waiter is likely to reply.
You: Bonsoir/Bonjour
Waiter: Bonsoir/Bonjour
You: Avez-vous une table pour [enter amount] personnes s’il vous plaît ? or J’ai réservé une table au nom de [family name].
Waiter : Oui bien sûr, suivez-moi.
You : Merci beaucoup.
*taking orders*
You : Oui c’était délicieux.
Waiter : Voulez-vous un café ?
You : Oui/Non merci.
(Could we have the bill please?)
Other questions or statements you may want to ask/make during your meal are :
Est-ce que vous avez une table près de la fenêtre? - Do you have a table near the window ?
– I would like to look at the menu please.
I think there’s a mistake in the bill.
– Could I have more sugar please ?
Je voudrais ma viande bien cuit/à point/saignant – I would like my meat well done/perfectly cooked(medium rare)/rare.
