About Me:Hi I’m Nadege and I study French at the University of Leeds, and I have just completed my third year abroad in Montpellier studying literature and enjoying the sunshine! I love art; painting and being creative, as well as photography and baking. Travelling is my favourite hobby at the moment; experiencing the French language and culture. I hope you enjoy reading some of my articles!
At only 24 years old, Emma Watson has become one of the most well-known names around the world, and she is a true inspiration to many people. Although Emma Watson is globally known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, her success has continued not only through her acting career, but through her involvement in the fashion and modelling industry and through her passion fighting for women’s rights.
Emma Watson was born in Paris, France in 1990 to Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson. However, when her parents divorced, she moved to England with her mother and brother, living in Oxford. Emma Watson attended Stagecoach Theatre Arts whilst still being at school, where she became confident in acting. Emma Watson had had no real acting experience before auditioning to be cast in the Harry Potter films, yet she impressed the casting agents and at the age of 11, she appeared in her first film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Following the film’s success, Emma Watson won the Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actress and continued filming for the seven other films.
By the fifth film; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which was released in 2007, Emma Watson had had such a huge success in the Harry Potter films that she had earned over £10million and it was said she would never have to work again. However, this statement was proved incorrect as Emma Watson aimed to continue her studies even whilst filming. She attended Brown University in Rhode Island, United States and also Oxford University in England and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature after 5 years, which shows that Emma Watson's aim is to continue learning and to grow as a person.
As well as having ‘the brains’, Emma Watson also has ‘the looks’ as she has been involved in the modelling world since 2005. From appearing on the cover of Teen Vogue, to being the face of Burberry and Lancôme, Emma Watson has also worked with People Tree, a fair trade fashion brand, as part of her humanitarian efforts. She increased awareness about ethical fashion and highlighted the fact that less than 1% of cotton in the world is Fair Trade. As Emma Watson inspires generations with her fashion sense, she knew she could make a difference in the world, aiming to reduce poverty through the means of fashion. Additionally, she designed her entire fashion range in her gap year!
Along with Fairtrade fashion, Emma Watson had always shown an interest in promoting girls’ education and her visits to Bangladesh and Zambia enabled her to become an ambassador for Camfed International which helps eradicate poverty by educating girls in rural Africa. Emma Watson wants to empower girls across the world, and in July 2014 she became a UN Goodwill Ambassador which is incredible at such a young age. In her powerful speech which she delivered in New York to promote her HeForShe campaign, she draws on her experiences to show that gender equality has not yet been achieved and she has become the new face promoting feminism. Emma Watson has also given speeches in Uruguay and Switzerland in order to encourage more people to take action and to join her in the HeForShe solidarity movement aiming to put an end to gender inequality.
Consequently, I greatly admire Emma Watson because although she has grown up under the limelight from a young age, she remains a humble individual who continues to inspire others through her intellect, talent and desire to make a real difference in the world. She proves that any person at any age, from any background can make an impact in the world and Emma Watson will continue to be an inspirational person in years to come.
