David LaChapelle

David LaChapelle

David LaChapelle is a very famous photographer, and also a director, who is known for his work in the fashion, advertising and fine art industry. Born in Connecticut in 1969, LaChapelle’s first job as a photographer was thanks to Andy Warhol, who offered him to work for Interview magazine at the young age of 17. Since, LaChapelle has also directed films, commercials and music videos for artists as well as being a photographer.

You may not know that LaChapelle created the Channel 4 advertisement for the first season of Lost, an American television drama series, where the characters were filmed as dancing partners. Also, he has written and directed his own film, named ‘Rize’, which is an American documentary film about the new style of dancing called ‘krumping’ which arose in Los Angeles in the 1990s. Additionally, LaChapelle has directed a commercial for H&M, which was inspired by the story of Romeo and Juliet. Other advertisements created by LaChapelle are for clients such as Burger King. Lastly, in the field of directing, LaChapelle has directed many music videos for famous stars such as Elton John, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Blink 182 and many more.

His two books which are published novels of his photographs, called ‘LaChapelle Land’ and ‘Hotel LaChapelle’ portray his famous portraits of celebrities. His photographs are known for his surreal and humorous style and incorporate fashion, beauty and glamour. His photographs are usual and form a hyper-realistic style. He uses saturated colours, and scenes which are known for his boundless creativity. LaChapelle once said; “I believe in a visual language that should be as strong as the written word” which suggests why his photography style is so unique, and ‘out there’ in terms of creativity.

LaChapelle works with men and women, often celebrities, to attract attention, and his images incorporate numerous props, elements of fantasy, dramatic makeup, and unusual themes, which all aid to create eye-catching images. So eye-catching in fact, that you could focus on a particular image for a while and continue to notice new aspects. LaChapelle does often create photographs containing some nudity, which incorporate glamour and link to the theme of desire. Additionally, a typical style of LaChapelle’s is to create photographs which show a person’s head, as if they were peering into a set. Facial expressions form the mood of the photograph; therefore it is the head which is the main object. The photograph of Cameron Diaz captures her face in a dollhouse, named ‘dollhouse disaster’ which can be seen in IMAGE 2. His photographs capture humorous themes, and are aesthetically pleasing.
