About Me:Hi I’m Nadege and I study French at the University of Leeds, and I have just completed my third year abroad in Montpellier studying literature and enjoying the sunshine! I love art; painting and being creative, as well as photography and baking. Travelling is my favourite hobby at the moment; experiencing the French language and culture. I hope you enjoy reading some of my articles!
Here are a few more of the typical stereotypes heard about French people..
French women all dress like models.
French fashion is very elegant, and in Paris I’m sure there are many more French people who ‘dress like models’. However, in day to day life, I do believe that French people dress well and very sophisticatedly. Even men have a much better fashion sense than I have ever seen before! You will never see French female teenagers on a night out wearing any revealing clothing and many do not ‘dress up’ for occasions. However, women in France have a very classy look about them – although there seems to be an increasing fashion trend, particularly in Montpellier, to adhere to a ‘hippy’ look with baggy, patterned colourful trousers and dreadlocks. Around University, this seems to be the preferred look.
The conclusion is: True.
French people are always carrying a baguette.
Personally, this was my favourite stereotype, as I had a vivid picture of a French person on a bike on their way to the boulangerie to buy baguettes and then cycling off with them in the basket. And yes, this really does happen. I knew French people ate a baguette with every meal – but they take it to the extreme! I have no idea how they stay so thin because as I do my weekly food shop, there will be someone in front of me buying about five baguettes. This is a daily occurrence for French people, and they tend to eat baguettes a lot more than croissants or pastries. Even I now find myself on days out with a baguette in hand – the best bread to exist!
The conclusion is: True.
French people drink wine all the time.
Wine has to be the most popular drink in France as France has the richest wine heritage. You are able to find decent bottles of wine for as cheap as two or three euros – about £1.50! For this reason, it is no wonder wine is drunk with every meal. It is typical for families to be out for dinner at about 8 o’clock in the evening, and then they stay out drinking wine until the late evening. It is not just youngsters who drink because in France, people tend to enjoy casual drinking a lot more than going out to clubs/bars. Personally, I think the nightlife in France is so much better as French people eat and drink for enjoyment, and love taking their time.
The conclusion is: True.
French people eat snails and frog’s legs.
In the article about Carcassonne, I discussed how snails and frog’s legs are not actually commonly found in France. These delicacies may be more likely found in Paris, or other touristic areas as French people know that this is a stereotype and therefore try and adhere to the idea foreign people have about French food – although they rarely eat them themselves.
The conclusion: False.
