Suitable for 15+
Sara (pronounced Sarah) Pascoe is a female comedian from London. She’s been on national television, with shows such as Live at the Apollo, QI and Mock the Week under her belt. A rising star, this show was originally written for the Edinburgh Fringe festival - one of the most (if not THE most!) prestigious comedy festival in the world.
The reason this article is only really suitable for more mature readers is because she deals with some very adult themes. If you’re below the age of 15… look away now, please! As a 33 year old woman, she’s experienced many embarrassing and awkward situations in her life, especially sexual ones. She’s got a great perspective on what it’s like to be an adult woman, and the ways in which they are so different from how they are shown to be in the media.
She particularly talks about women’s sexuality, and although it has always been repressed, she says, it’s always been there, equal to men’s sexuality. She discusses hefty topics in a light-hearted and funny manner, but at the same time it’s clever and thought-provoking. Page 3 of the Sun newspaper (that’s the page with topless women on it every day), she says, should be like jury duty – all women, of various different ages, shapes and sizes, should have to do it by law, and that way it wouldn’t be sexual or sexist anymore. You would often see elderly women giving a death stare straight down the camera lens, making the ‘reader’ feel incredibly awkward. Sounds like a strange idea, but when you hear it for yourself, it makes a lot more sense!
Pascoe tackles a lot of social problems head-on, and there’s a big focus on evolution, hence the title “Sara Pascoe vs. History”. She sarcastically remarks that we modern-day humans are the ‘peak’ of evolution, and that humanity is now going to go back on itself, in the same way that the universe expands to a certain point before shrinking. We’ll start being like Benjamin Button, because we start our lives in old age and end it by going back into our mother’s womb. History will go backwards, too. Hitler will take Jews out of concentration camps and put them into lovely houses… before history itself will come to an end in prehistoric mud. That’s why it’s called Sara Pascoe vs. History – and she successfully defeats it, too, something you can’t say for many people!
The venue was very intimate, which is possibly more difficult for a comedian than performing to a massive crowd – there’s no room for slip-ups as you can see every little detail in all the audience members’ faces. The scrutiny is really intense, and Pascoe handled the small room very, very well. She used it to her advantage, actually, because it felt like she was personally talking to you, a nice touch that was well-appreciated by the audience.
This is a great value for money comedy gig. If you want to be entertained but don’t want to break the bank, this is suited to young and old people alike, because she deals with topics that are oh-so-relatable. Pascoe is continuing her tour around the UK until February 21st, 2015.
