Located on the south coast of England, Brighton has always been a fashionable seaside resort as you are able to enjoy the best of both worlds: the bustling city life and the freedom of the sea. During the 18th century, Brighton became a popular health resort featuring sea bathing and once the railway was built in 1841 linking Brighton to London the town became a destination for tourists.

One of the top attractions in Brighton is the Royal Pavilion, a truly amazing work of architecture. It was once the royal palace for Prince Regent in the early 19th century, built as a seaside retreat, and was transformed by the architect John Nash between the years of 1815 and 1822 and is now one of the most exotic palaces in Britain. It was said that the Prince wanted John Nash to create a palace inspired by designs from the East, and his dream was fulfilled as the exterior is built with Indian style minarets and the interior has stunning Oriental designs. However, it has also been used to treat the sick and wounded during the First World War from 1914 to 1916, with the Great Kitchen becoming one of two operating theatres. Consequently, the Royal Pavilion had been turned into a hospital for those soldiers in the Indian army. It then became a hospital for treating British soldiers and remained open until 1920, when it was then handed back to Brighton Corporation.

The Brighton Marine Palace and Pier is another main tourist attraction which opened in 1899 and here you can enjoy the thrill of funfair rides and arcades. Also, walking along the beach to the Artists’ Quarter you will find many independent shops selling art, prints, souvenirs and locally made gifts in quaint beach huts along with many restaurants. It is here you can truly soak up the atmosphere of Brighton!

Brighton offers a huge variety of high-street shops and smaller specialist shops all in close proximity, providing an easy and relaxed shopping experience. Although there are numerous stylish shopping centres in Brighton, ‘The Lanes’ is where you will find vibrant independent shops which are unique. Located in the historic quarter of Brighton, The Lanes consists of mazes of small alleyways and cobblestone streets, with shops that range from selling music to vintage clothing to souvenirs and you are able to add a quirky edge to your shopping. So quirky in fact, that during my first visit to Brighton I was searching through some vintage clothing when under the table I noticed a duck in a basket – a real duck, and later when wondering the streets I saw the owner of the shop with the duck in his hand, as if it were something you see every day!

Additionally, Brighton is well-known for its arts and crafts, and therefore an arts festival is held in Brighton each May which is the second largest arts festival in the UK! You are able to visit many outdoor events linked with music, visual arts and theatre and there is also a children’s parade and many galleries to view.

Another important event in Brighton is the Gay Pride carnival which takes place every August in Preston Park where there are funfairs and carnival parades. Brighton is well known for its LGBT community which is supported by many bars, clubs and communities and many attend this event each year.

Brighton is a town which caters for all interests; with its vibrant night-life, its peaceful seafront and its unique shopping experiences you will never be bored! Brighton is also set amongst the beautiful countryside of the South Downs. In fact, over 40% of Brighton and Hove is located in the South Downs National Park, perfect for people who love nature.
