Behind the scenes of Drama

Behind the scenes of Drama

Have you ever had that feeling, that irritation at the back of your head, which appears every time you don’t know the answer to your own question? And it just creates this huge force on your shoulders and lingers there until you finally discover the answer?

Well, I’ve been sitting here for about an hour and half staring at my blank word document debating what the answer is to this question:

What is Drama?

And does anyone really know the meaning of it? Or is it just one of those questions that no one has the answer to?

Since the first moment I begun to study Drama as a GCSE instead of a typical lesson I had once a week, I initially thought it was all about becoming a character and standing on a stage to entertain an audience. In fact, most people would assume that there was nothing else to Drama. It was just a hobby most people took on and tried to make a career out of.

However what I have come to realise about the topic and take on when it comes to my own performances is that there's a lot more to Drama then what meets the eye. It takes you down an emotional journey that makes you see History and everyday situations from a different perspective, and allows you to challenge yourself and see others in a different light.

For instance, the first task I was set for my exam was based around the tragic events of 9/11. It had to include the thoughts and emotions the victims and their family members experienced that day and we had to incorporate all these difficult techniques to make the performance more realistic. You know techniques such as still images and slow motion? The ones you see whenever you go out to a play or a musical?

Anyway, for one of the activities we had to listen to this phone call between a victim and his wife. He was mumbling at first, and I couldn’t really understand what he was saying, but then the connection became clearer and the sound of his crying almost made my heart break. I had misinterpreted the situation. He was talking to his daughter, and her pitch made me believe she was roughly about five years of age.

I remember the disappointment in her voice as her father yelled at her down the phone, urging her to grab her mother. He never meant to hurt his little girl’s feelings. He just desperately needed to speak to his wife about the situation he was in, and she would not listen. All she wanted to do was explain, in detail, how her swimming lesson went that day.

It was probably one of the most daunting moments of my life, and what made it even worst was the fact that those finals words of frustration he yelled at her were the last she ever heard from him. During the conversation with his wife, the sound of glass shattering and walls collapsing pounded out of the speakers and then the line went dead......he had died during the phone call with the woman he loved.

So, I guess there is an answer to my question. Drama is a way of life that some people choose. It captures the soul in a way no one will understand unless you have a true passion for the subject. It allows you to expand your knowledge on History and understand, in depth, the true emotions people felt during certain times.

I for one will never regret the day I decided to take on Drama. It changes people for the better, and in my opinion turns you into a better person. It allows you to step into other peoples' shoes, whether they are characters or actual human beings, and see what life was like for them. It's not just a subject, it's a lesson in life.
