We all have hobbies or things that we do to enjoy ourselves, and telling other people about them gives us a lot of pleasure. Learning about what other people do for fun is also a key part of friendship, and a great way to find common interests. So, if you meet somebody in Greece and you want to find out more about them, asking about their hobbies is a super way to begin. Here’s a list of words and phrases that you could use, in order to make conversation.
I like/I enjoy = Μου αρέσει “mou are-si”
I like doing… for fun = Μου αρέσει να κάνω… για διασκέδαση “mou are-si na ka-no… yia thee-as-keh-dasi”
I like to play = Μου αρέσει να παίζω “mou are-si na pay-zo…”
Fun = διασκέδαση “thee-as-keh-dasi”
Pleasure = αναψυχή “anapsi-chi”
Activity = απασχόληση “apas-cho-lisi”
Hobby = χόμπι “cho-bi”
Entertainment = ψυχαγωγία “psi-cha-go-gi-a”
My interests are… = Τα ενδιαφέροντά μου είναι “ta endia-fe-ron-ta mou ee-nay”
Leisure = ελεύθερος χρόνος “elev-theros chro-nos”. Literally, free time!
Sport = αθλητισμός “athlitis-mos” or σπορ “spor”.
Football = ποδόσφαιρο “pothos-fairo”
Rugby = ράγκμπι “rag-bi”
Swimming = κολύμπι “koli-bee”
Tennis = τένις “te-nis”
Cricket = κρίκετ “kri-ket”
Badminton = παιγνίδι όμοιο με τέννις “paig-ni-di o-mee-oh meh te-nnis”
Hockey = χόκεϊ “hoh-key”
Jogging = τζόκινγκ “tzog-ging”

Μαρία: Ωραία! Μου αρέσει το ποδόσφαιρο, αλλά το αγαπημένο μου άθλημα είναι πατινάζ.
Κωνσταντίνος: Μου αρέσει πατινάζ, πάρα πολύ!
Μαρία: Πάω στην παραλία τώρα.
Κωνσταντίνος: Μου αρέσει η παραλία, αλλά εγώ είμαι πρόκειται να το πάρκο τώρα.

There will be a lot of words in that conversation that you didn’t recognise, because you haven’t learned them yet! Don’t worry, the translated conversation is below. Hopefully you managed to get the general point of what they were saying, though.
Maria: Hello Constantine, how are you?
Constantine: Hello Maria, I’m fine thank you. I’m going to play football.
Maria: Nice! I like football, but my favourite sport is roller skating.
Constantine: I like roller skating, too!
Maria: I’m going to the beach now.
Constantine: I like the beach, but I’m going to the park now.
Maria: Okay, see you soon!
Constantine: See you soon.
And that’s the first ten lessons done! In the next phase, we’ll be looking at more subjects, but also we’ll be attempting to tackle one of the most troublesome aspects of the Greek language – all the different tenses!
