Award Season

Award Season

‘Tis the season to be… applauding! With February upon us, it means that the onslaught of award shows will soon begin. With actor after actor, director after director and writer after writer receiving thunderous applause, and possibly something shiny in thanks for their service in their particular fields. These, of course, are not just exciting for the content creators, but also for fans galore. Perhaps you are excited for your favourite, mostly unknown singer to receive their first ever award, or desperate for your favourite animated film to get the artistic recognition it deserves. Whatever the reason, award season is an exciting time for many, so here is some background on the upcoming award shows.

The Grammys

A Grammy award, short for Gramophone award, is given to those in recognition of their service to the music industry, whether than be modern, classical, theatre or film based. First beginning in February 1959, to honour the musical contributors of 1958, the award ceremony has been popular ever since. First broadcast in 1978, The Grammys has been a hugely popular event ever since, the lowest number of viewers being approximately 17 million, likely due not only to the awards, but also the live performances of famous artists. This year, the Grammys will air on February 15th.

The Oscars

The Oscar is an award given to those in recognition for their services to the film industry, first presented in 1929, and aired on television in 1953. There is some dispute over how the statue got its name, the once academy president Better Davis claiming she named it after her first husband, although other stories attribute the honour to other members of staff. Award ceremonies sometimes come under criticism for representing the moneymaking side of the arts, rather than respect for art created purely for arts sake. Namely; those who are famous become more famous, and those who are talented, yet overlooked, go on unrecognised. The Oscar controversy, which is presented every year, is certainly demonstrative of that significant flaw in academy awards. Because of this, many have chosen to boycott the Oscars, although, if you want to watch it,  it will be screened on February 28th.

The Tonys

The Tonys may not be airing for a long time, but as a musical theatre enthusiast, I feel it would be wrong to write about significant award shows, without mentioning one of the best. The Tony awards, starting in 1948, are given to those who have done outstanding service to the theatre and musical theatre community. Like the Grammys, although it predates them, The Tonys includes musical performances from shows, as well as a musical introduction from the show’s host (go and look up Neil Patrick Harris’ introduction to the 2013 Tonys. I promise, you won’t regret it). Movies and Music can both be found online, on television, and so on; but the magic of theatre is hardly ever found without spending a significant amount on tickets. This award show is so important, as it allows those who aren’t typically able to see theatre to do so, bringing them into the world that they love.

So, those are some of the up and coming award shows of 2015; hopefully you’ll watch, and enjoy, at least one!
