About Me:Hi I’m Nadege and I study French at the University of Leeds, and I have just completed my third year abroad in Montpellier studying literature and enjoying the sunshine! I love art; painting and being creative, as well as photography and baking. Travelling is my favourite hobby at the moment; experiencing the French language and culture. I hope you enjoy reading some of my articles!
Annecy, in the Haute-Savoie department of France, located in the Rhône-Alpes region, lies east of Lyon, not far from Geneva, in eastern France. The breathtaking commune is formed by the Annecy town and the old town ‘Annecy-le-vieux’ and is situated north of Lake Annecy, the third largest lake in France. This lake is the main attraction to Annecy, because the views across it are spectacular, with the snowcapped mountains in the distance, the sun beaming down on the lake, and the blue and clear crystal waters.
The lake is not taken over by tourist boats polluting the water. You can however hire your own paddle boat! Annecy lake remains a serene environment where you are able to relax by the beach and enjoy the views which go as far as the eye can see. The lake is only 22 miles south of Geneva, and there are nine villages around the lake which tourists and locals often visit, particularly during the summer months when running and cycling are the most popular sporting activites. These villages are called; Annecy, Veyrier, Menthon St Bernard, Talloires, Angon, Doussard, Duingt, St Jorioz and Sevrier and each have their own beaches. Annecy is a very active commune, with many people running, rollerblading, hiking and cycling which gives you the motivation to enjoy the surrounding beauty of Annecy via these sports. Lake Annecy has a cycle path of 28 miles; therefore cycling may be the preferred option for exploring the different villages.
Annecy-le-vieux is a picturesque town, and the houses and restaurants are very colourful, with many independent boutiques and shops. The town is also catered for tourists with many touristic shops available. As you walk into the town, a river runs through the middle, with small bridges creating crossings to the other side of the town. When sitting outside eating or drinking and relaxing by the river, you are able to take in the views of the mountain tops in the distance. When I visited Annecy, the Annecy carnival was taking place, which is a very popular event, and many people dressed up in costumes and people were continously taking pictures of all the different costumes and masks. Even small children dressed up!
I visited Annecy via a coach from Lyon, and I was in shock when I woke up half way through the journey and the coach was encircled by clouds, snow and pine trees. It felt so Christmassy, and although there are many ski resorts located around Annecy, I thoroughly recommend visiting during early spring, as there is still snow on the mountains, yet the sun is shining and you are bale to make the most of your days in the warm weather. Tranquil waters, snowcapped mountains, fresh air and picturesque scenery charaterise Annecy, a commune which gives you a taste of paradise!
