INTRODUCTION (basic information about you!):
As a highly motivated, confident individual, already fully immersed in the academic world, I am extremely interested in becoming a Tutor for your company.
I am currently studying English Literature, Classical Civilisation, Theatre and Drama Studies and History for my A2 examinations. I believe that, as I am still set in the context of day-to-day education, my knowledge and experience of learning, as a process and as a skill, is both fresh and refined. Having only recently taken my GCSEs, I have attained and maintained both subject-specific knowledge and my own methods of learning GCSE-style course content, having identified myself as a mainly visual and partly kinaesthetic learner.
EVIDENCE (proof to show that you'd be good at the job you're applying for)
I understand that people learn in different ways, and how a teacher therefore has to adapt to specific pupils. As an English Prefect, one of my roles of responsibility was to tutor numerous Year 11 students in the run-up to their English Literature and English Language GCSEs. The role required me to adapt my methods of teaching to suit certain pupils – for example, one student in particular was struggling to grasp the meaning of different literary terms, (e.g ‘stream-of-consciousness’). At first I explained each of the terms individually. I then gave him written definitions to learn - both methods were unsuccessful. I then gave him practical examples of these terms, including a ‘stream-of-consciousness’ excerpt from ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. This put the terms into a ‘real’ context, which gave him a deeper understanding of what he was trying to learn. As a tutor, this made me learn the value of both adaptability and patience. I’ve adopted similar skills through my work as a Drama prefect – a role which has also helped my understanding of communication with people, and allowed me to articulate myself more fluidly and concisely. Through taking tutoring roles throughout my years at secondary school, I’ve acquired a skillset that, I believe, lends well to me exploring tutoring in a professional capacity.
I’ve also had experience in tutoring younger children. Both of my siblings have sat the Bexley and Dartford 11+, and I’ve helped in the various disciplines examined, often simplifying things to make them easier to understand, and trying to relate them to real-life contexts.
My teachers and employers have always commended me on my interpersonal skills, engaging personality and ability to explain concepts to other people, whether complex or simple, in a way that is easy to understand. I’ve also been commended on my patience and my ability to listen – all integral attributes, I think, of a good teacher. As a result of this praise, I’ve been asked to participate in the ‘Study Buddy scheme’ – a system in which a Year 13 student is allocated to help a struggling Year 11 student with all their GCSE subjects, and their revision technique.
REASONING (why you want the job you're applying for):
I think I would be a good Tutor because it’s a role I would genuinely enjoy undertaking. I’ve always done well at school, especially in subjects where I’ve been inspired by a particularly passionate teacher, and I would love to be able to benefit others by imparting my passion for learning and education.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Ella Tournes.
