Aladdin is a great Disney production which has all the ingredients for success, including a hilariously funny animal side-kick, a powerful evil villain, catchy songs, a life-changing adventure, and a happy ever after. The American film was produced by Waltz Disney feature Animation in 1992 and became Waltz Disney’s thirty-first series of Animated Classics. The film was directed by John Musker and features many talented actors in the voice cast, including the amazing Robin Williams in the role of Genie! Aladdin distinguishes itself from more traditional Disney films as it is set in a foreign land and is based on the old Arab folktale from One Thousand and One Nights.

Without revealing too much of the film (if you haven’t seen it then I strongly advise you watching it asap!), the story has many themes that intertwine including love, the pursuit of power, the fulfilment of wishes,  and the division between the rich and poor. Jasmine, the Sultan’s daughter, feels trapped in the palace as her farther frantically aspires to have her wedded as soon as possible. In an attempt to experience the real world, Jasmine runs away to the village market where she meets street rat Aladdin and his cute pet monkey Abu. Sparks fly between the two but soon enough they are separated. In the meantime, the Sultan’s advisor, Jafar, demands for Aladdin’s arrest and sends him to a cave where Aladdin finds a magic flying carpet and a lamp, which is home to the genie. The genie can grant Aladdin three wishes as long as he remains the owner of the lamp. Aladdin’s first wish is to become prince so he can legally try to court the princess. Jafar makes it his mission to become Sultan, even if that means destroying Aladdin and forcing Princess Jasmin to marry him. I won’t spoil the rest for you so if you’d like to know what happens to Aladdin make sure to watch this all-time Disney  classic!

In my opinion, the genie and the animals truly make the film comical. Robin Williams’ talents shine throughout the movie as the genie makes funny jokes (my favourite is when he transforms into a bee and says ‘beeee yourself!’ in Aladdin’s ear - then again people say I don’t have the best sense of humour!). The catchy musical score in the film was written by Alan Menken and lyrics of the six songs were written by Ashman and Tim Rice. The songs range from cynical (Prince Ali) to funny (A Friend Like Me) and romantic (A Whole New World) and I assure you you’ll still be singing the lyrics after the film ends!

The majority of reviews on the film have been incredibly positive and quickly became the most successful film of the year as it gained over $217 million in revenue in the US and over $504 million across the globe.  Aladdin also received multiple awards, the majority of which were awarded due to its amazing soundtrack. The film’s rise to fame led to two sequels (the Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves), a cartoon television series, toys, and lots of Disney merchandise. Aladdin hit Broadway in 2014 and, if it’s anything like the film, it is definitely worth seeing!
