A Trip Around The World

A Trip Around The World

A trip around the world

I fingered the handle, clutching it tightly within my grasp; I pushed it, swinging it wide open. Dust flew and swirled around me, urging me to cough and the black, wide tongue of darkness licked me comfortably. As I climbed the ladder and hauled myself up into the attic, my eyes slightly adjusted to the darkness and I could just about make out the outlines of boxes, piles of old junk just lying about in a messy heap.

Stumbling about a little and stretching my arms out in front of me like a zombie, I fumbled about in the boxes for a while. After a few moments, I seemed to have found what I was looking for. An old globe. I was in desperate need of a globe, as for our Geography homework we were assigned to learn about different countries and exactly where they were. Relieved hugely, I calmly stepped down the ladder, closing the little door above me in the process.

The globe was old and frail, a little chipped in some places, but it was still fine to use. I placed it carefully on my table, flicked open my homework book and got started. I scribbled down notes and wrote a few paragraphs down about Siberia and Russia; after quite a lot of writing and spinning the globe, I was weighed dwon by boredom, as if carrying a burden on my back for a few hours.

Soon, I was randomly tracing my fingers around the globe, spinning it like a spinning top. (Yeah, I know, I know, it’s cheesy. So what?!) Suddenly, it occurred to me, that I really wanted to travel around the world. After running my little person around the whole ‘world’; (I got my index finger and my middle finger and pretended that they were legs and controlled them to go around the globe, not the world!) I sat back relaxingly in my chair, closed my eyes and day-dreamed (with my eyes closed) about sailing around the whole world, about lying on a luxurious beach in Spain, climbing the Eiffel Tower in France, riding a camel (I heard that it’s very uncomfortable riding a camel, bumping about between two humps) in Egypt...

At that moment, my heart felt a pang as I really wanted to become Michael in ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’; which was written by Michael Morpurgo, and sail around the world, the oceans, explore countries, just in a tiny sail boat...

Suddenly, I had an idea. It was brilliant. It was blinking wildly inside my head, just desperate to burst and explode from my mouth.

With hopes that my strict mum would agree, I raced down the stairs, sliding on the banister and shooting up to Mum, who was in her study room downstairs. (She was very strict about rules, and we had loads of them in the house, just because of her!)

“Mum” I asked very sweetly, smiling cutely and clasping my hands together in front of me, shoulders hunched and rocking back and forth on my heels. “For homework, we only have one thing to do all year, which includes the summer holidays. We all have to sail around the world, even tiny islands. When shall we start?”

     And guess what Mum said!

     “Maybe next week?”
