A Special Gift

A Special Gift

Sapphire’s special birthday was coming up, as she was turning ten. Excitement was bubbling up inside her, her eyes dancing as eagerness swept over her. When it was the day of her birthday, she had to come downstairs, blindfolded by her Father; she was so excited that she couldn’t stop squirming and wriggling.

Her Parents wouldn’t even let her take the blindfold off in the car. But when Sapphire took off the blindfold, she was convinced that this was the most magical place in the world! She was called Sapphire for two reasons: she was born in September and so Sapphire was her birthstone and also, Sapphire’s favourite colour was blue. Baby blue, sapphire blue, sky blue, azure blue, aqua and turquoise blue. Whatever shade of blue, Sapphire loved it.

So, of course, her parents chose the colour indigo for the decorations. It was the perfect match for the beach! There were periwinkle balloons tied together in big bunches, a lazuli covering to put on the party table, cups and plates set out and a beautiful, mazarine cake with three layers. It had pink and white edible roses stuck on the top and red, dark blue and white icing squirted on top to spell out the word: Sapphire. The first layer contained delicious marzipan, the second layer contained gooey jam and the last layer contained thick, luscious lemon and cherry crumble. Sapphire licked her lips hungrily.

Sapphire’s best friends were there too, all gaping in awe and amazement at Sapphire’s new party dress. It was very poufy and peacock blue and was covered in glitter and sequins, sewn carefully onto the front. The skirt draped elegantly onto the pure, sandy ground, long and lovely. The arms and the skirt both had delicate ruffles that billowed in the soft, warm breeze.

After Sapphire had opened all of her presents, she swivelled around to face her Mother.

“Where’s my present from you?” she asked fervently, leaning forward.

“Well, my present is a very special gift. My present to you, is your birth,” replied her Mother calmly.

“Birth?” asked Sapphire confusedly, puzzled as she cocked her head to one side.

“Yes. If I hadn’t given birth to you, you wouldn’t even be here. And if you weren't here, you wouldn’t be enjoying this lovely party of yours." "So," Sapphire's mother concluded wisely, "count yourself lucky to be living in such a lovely world."
