Tips for A level Art

Some may think it is difficult to do well in art A level because it is subjective, however, use this to your advantage! Art is about being able to show your ideas, explain why you did what you did, and acknowledge how you can improve, then work to improve! It is about taking the correct steps to make a beautiful sketchbook. Not everything has to be perfect, rough sketches, mind-maps and exploration of techniques are heavily encouraged. If you are a perfectionist, you may find this a bit more challenging. It is important to acknowledge all criteria to get a high mark.

Art A level is split into different assessment objectives: AO1, AO2, AO3, AO4. Your overall mark is 60% from a personal investigation and 40% from an externally set task. So what does this mean? Your own person investigation means you get the chance to explore any topic you wish. Many students like to do one of their favourite topics from previous years of art as it gives them the opportunity to expand on their older ideas and improve their techniques. Others like to take on a completely new topic. It’s your choice and that’s the beauty of it. However I advise you to make a decision early. It can be easy to let weeks go by, and not really have a direction for your project. This can make things quite difficult to then get your project done in time. My biggest advice for art A level is to not fall behind, it is an ongoing subject that never really ends, so you need to balance your time, keep on adding to your sketchbook. This way you will not have to spend all-nighters trying to fill your sketchbook in at last minute! But back to choosing your project. Pick something that excites you, something you want to spend your free time doing, because undoubtably, you will spend a lot of your time working on it. Within this project you will also write an essay on it, so again, pick something that excites you. You do not need to know exactly where the project is going to take you, but it is good to have a rough idea. To help do this, write down your ideas, explore where these ideas can take you. Consider the materials you might use and the artists you may want to study. Look at some art galleries, actively search for some inspiration. A personal favourite of mine was to look on pinterest, there are all sorts of creative ideas on there, with lots of artists. You will again need to do this research for your externally set task, just this time you will not get to choose the project title. We will go into the externally set task later.
