A guide to London: Clapham Common

Clapham Common is an area in the south of London. If you live in London, it might seem more exciting to leave the city during holidays and long weekends, but the city has a lot to offer. If you live outside London, Clapham Common should be one of the places you visit if you can.

Things to do:

The Common Itself: the “Common” is a large park, one of the biggest in London. Every weekend you will see hundreds of people relaxing in the park on picnic blankets. Around the park you will find many restaurant and café’s which sell picnic baskets which you can eat for lunch. Towards the North East of the park there is also a paddling pool where you can play with your friends. There is also a skateboarding park towards the north east of the park, which is where you will arrive if you take the tube to Clapham Common. If you have a model boat, there is a pond specifically with that purpose, as well.

Eat: there are countless café’s around the Common. These includes chains such as Byron Burgers, and Subway, but also includes many, many restaurants that you will only find in this area. If you like tarts, go to Tart Café on The Pavement (that’s the name of the street, not just any pavement), or go to Joe’s Public, right next to the Clapham Common tube stop, for some of the best pizza in London. You can also go to The Sun for Lunch, a cosy restaurant on Old Town, in which you can sit among plastic parrots and fairy lights as you eat a burger or some other yummy food! You can also eat in the park itself, if you fancy. There is a café called La Baita in the very center of the park, which serves snacks and hot drinks.

Food Market: Every Saturday, Sunday, and some Bank Holidays, you can find a food market on Venn street at the exit of the Clapham Common tube station. They serve anything from fresh, organic vegetables, to Greek sandwiches, some of the best brownies in the world, and pulled pork sandwiches. This street also has a small cinema which shows a small amount of movies every evening, so if you need to sit down after a long day of wandering around the Common, this is the place for you.

Sports: the Common has many sports facilities. It was one of the first places in the UK to have an organized game of cricket, which many still play. There are also many teams you can sign up for, including for children to work out in teams and do things like running or playing football. There are also Netball teams and basketball teams that you can join. These teams usually want people to sign up for a longer amount of time, so if you live in the neighbourhood, this is a great thing for you to do. If you don’t live nearby, bring your friends and any equipment you may need and feel free to use the facilities in the park, unless someone else is already using them!

I hope you have a wonderful day relaxing in Clapham Common! Please let me know in the comments if there is anything you think should be added to the list.
