Now you don’t have to be a footie fanatic to know who this man is, as the most successful manager in British football you would have done well to miss him! Sir Alex Ferguson has been the manager of Manchester United football club for 26 years winning 38 trophies for the club, but now after an incredibly successful reign, Sir Alex announces his retirement.
The 71 year old Scotsman has stepped down from his position after 56 years in the football business; 17 of which were spent as a player for teams including Scotland’s national football team, and a further 39 years as a manager. Alex Ferguson has been a key figure in British football for decades, but the problem now arises as to who will replace him. With an incredible record of two Champions League Crowns, five FA Cups, four League Cups and thirteen league titles, his successor will certainly have a lot to live up to! However, Sir Alex believes that he has left the club in strongest possible position moving forward.
Alex Ferguson will remain a director and ambassador for the club, but Manchester United fans will no longer see ‘Fergie’ by the side of the pitch chewing gum – a famous habit of his. In fact, it has been reported that the piece of gum that Ferguson chewed in his last ever game as Manchester United manager was apparently sold on eBay by a fan for nearly £390,000! Pretty gross, but at least all the proceeds went to charity.
So as the club’s players and staff say goodbye to their leader, fans around the world praise Sir Alex’s contribution to British football, from ex-players to the Prime Minister himself, not to mention the millions of Manchester United fans across the globe. Though it’s sad to see him step down, Sir Alex Ferguson will be remembered by millions as one of the most successful and admired managers in the history of the game and leaves an incredible legacy behind him.
