Margaret Thatcher Dies

Baroness Thatcher, the former Prime Minister has died peacefully at the age of 87. The announcement was made by a family spokesperson, who informed the press that Mrs Thatcher had passed away after suffering a stroke that morning, whilst staying at the Ritz Hotel in London.

This sad news is particularly melancholy for members of the Conservative party for whom Margaret Thatcher was a key historical figure, completely changing the party’s political approach and leading them through three consecutive election wins. The current Prime Minister David Cameron has expressed his sorrow upon hearing the news and praised Mrs Thatcher’s contributions both to his party and to the country as a whole.

Lady Thatcher was the first woman to ever hold the role of Prime Minister of Great Britain and was the Conservative Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, becoming known as the ‘Iron Lady’ for her steely resolve and for her firm opposition to the Soviet Union and socialism.

Margaret Thatcher dies of stroke Aged 87

The Houses of Parliament, No 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace all lowered their Union Jack flags to half-mast as a symbol of mourning and flowers were placed outside her house in Belgravia, London. It has been stated that Baroness Thatcher will receive a ceremonial funeral with full military honours. The funeral will consist of a funeral parade starting at the Chapel at the Palace of Westminster and the coffin will then be transported along the funeral route to Westminster Abbey, where the funeral service will be held.

Though there are many who did not agree with Lady Thatcher’s policies and some who are less than sorry about her death, it is clear that her funeral will be fitting to her position as a former head of state and large numbers of supporters are expected to line the streets on the day.

There can be no doubt that Baroness Thatcher played an important part in the shaping of British history and will be sorely missed by many. Her funeral will be a televised tribute to her contribution to Britain and will give her many supporters a chance to say goodbye.
