The World Cup 2014 is officially underway! Yesterday the World Cup hosts, Brazil set the tournament off to a great start with a huge opening ceremony, reflecting the colour, diversity and flamboyancy of the Brazilian culture. With 660 dancers, stilt walkers, trampolinists and numerous elaborate costumes the event was certainly an elaborate spectacle, complete with a performance of the official world cup song; “We are One”, by Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull. Though there weren’t any fireworks as the ceremony was during the daytime, Brazil still managed to start the world cup with a bang!
The first game of the tournament took place just hours after the opening ceremony, with the hosts set to play Croatia in the same stadium. The nation has a huge football tradition and so Brazilian fans had high expectations from their home team, and the players certainly didn’t let them down with a 3–1 win! So all in all, despite worries that the stadium wouldn’t be finished in time, the World Cup has got off to a great start, but what about the England team?
Despite the inevitable flags, England shirts and maybe even face paint that you will see over the next few weeks, the reality is that our chances of winning the world cup are very slim indeed. However, that is unlikely to stop fans from watching in their millions and hoping that England manager, Roy Hodgson and his squad of 23 players can get through to the second round. In the meantime all we can do is watch and wait as England play their first game against Italy on Saturday.
It’s safe to say that, with the best players in the world are all gathered in Brazil, there are certainly going to be some interesting matches over the next few weeks. Millions of football fans across the globe are expected to tune in as the 32 qualifying teams compete for the ultimate prize, the World Cup trophy. So, there’s really only one thing left to say – COME ON ENGLAND!
