A cover letter is a chance to show your personality and passion for a job role. It will pick out the key experiences from your CV that best match the job role so you can sell your skills. Be sure to read the job profile carefully so that you know what the recruiter is looking for. For example, in the essential skills section of a job profile, it will have a list of skills the recruiter wants you to have to be a successful candidate.
It is therefore your job to show the recruiter that you have these skills and give examples of when you attained them. An idea would be to write a short paragraph about each of the key skills on the job profile, showing how you attained them. Use the words from the job profile as a recruiter will want to see that you have these specific skills and the more words you use that they have used to create the job description, the more you will match it.
I would firstly write a short introduction about where you found the job role advertised, who you are and why you’re interested in the role. Then, a paragraph about each of the skills you have that they are looking for in an applicant, giving examples of your experience and how you achieved them. This could be from work, volunteering or education. Finally, it is essential to have a concluding few sentences to bring the cover letter to its natural end and that you look forward to hearing back.
A tip is that a cover letter should be roughly ¾ of a page long to 1 page. Anything more or below would be considered too short/long.
Good luck!
