100 albums to listen to before you turn twenty : 26-30

Another installment of ‘100 albums to listen to before you turn twenty.’

26)  Wicked: Original Broadway Cast Recording - Various  -  Although this is an album of a musical, it is not your typical cheesy musical fare. First off, if you haven’t seen Wicked, go see it now! And secondly, have a listen to this album and you’ll be hooked! Telling the backstory of ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ focusing on Elphaba, the ‘Wicked’ witch of the West, you’ll learn a whole lot more about the story than you ever knew before. The score is wonderful, with absolutely stellar vocals from Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth, and lushly orchestrated instrumentation. The lyrics are witty and amusing, and at times, heartbreaking, others, utterly uplifting, but it never becomes cheesy. The whole soundtrack is excellent, and I highly recommend the album.

Notable songs: No Good Deed, The Wizard and I, What is This Feeling?

27)  This is Acting - Sia  -  Sia’s latest offering, demonstrating not only her phenomenal vocal abilities, but her immense skill at composition. The album looks at various important themes, such as life and death and broken relationships. She fuses Pop, Electronic, R&B and Soul together for an album that is truly irresistable to the ear. Despite covering some heavy themes, Sia does it with dignity and tact, and she still manages to provide some upbeat anthems.

Notable songs: Broken Glass, Alive, Move Your Body

28)  Thriller - Michael Jackson  -  One of the best-selling albums of all time, and with good reason. This album rocketed Jackson into worldwide fame, and successfully moved him away from the Jackson 5, and into his own solo career. Although his second solo album as an adult, Jackson was allowed to write music for this album, unlike the previous album, and thus, it was a massive hit. This is Pop as it should be; catchy choruses, flawless vocals, intricate melodies, complementary horn sections and more. Jackson treats us to the chilling and at the same time amusing ‘Thriller’ that will forever be a classic dance tune, and also gives us the beautiful, relaxing ‘Human Nature.’ If you’re going to listen to anything, listen to this album.

Notable songs: Human Nature, Wannabe Startin’ Somethin’, Billie Jean

29)  Undiscovered - James Morrison  -  Morrison’s voice is nothing short of liquid gold. His vocal tone alone makes this album worth your time. Even better, he’s a dab hand at writing music and playing the piano. An album jam-packed with jazzy chords, fused with neo-soul, and utterly poetic lyrics, it is a fantastic debut album.

Notable songs: Wonderful World, You Give Me Something, The Letter

30)  What Hits? - The Red Hot Chilli Peppers  -  The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are a band you can always rely on for a rock hit. With interesting lead vocals, excellent guitar riffs and melodies, and a truly excellent rock update on a Stevie Wonder track, what’s not to love? This album features some classic songs, and is incredibly catchy. If you’ve never heard the Chillis before, check them out now!

Notable songs: Under the Bridge, Higher Ground, Show Me Your Soul
